Welcome to our 2010 Festival!

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the births of Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann, which gives us the excuse, if one is needed, to feature several works by each composer.

We celebrate Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) with a performance of his Cello Sonata in G minor on 24 July, and a special Chopin Gala Concert on 28 July when Thomas McIntosh, an acknowledged Chopin expert, plays a concert devoted entirely to Chopin's piano music. The Old School kitchen is enthusiastically joining in the celebrations with its first attempt at a Polish supper to fol-
low the concert!

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) is commemorated by performances of his Cello Concerto, Piano Concerto, Phantaisie Pieces for Cello and Piano, and Fantaisie in C major Opus 17 for Piano. The decision to perform the Piano Concerto in an arrangement for string quintet is a reflection of the success of the concerts in December 2009 when all five of Beethoven's Piano Concerti were performed in this format

The String Quartet, which made such a fine impression here last year with Ralph Vaughan Williams' String Quartet No1, is playing that composer's String Quartet No2, 'The Emperor' String Quartet of Haydn and the great Schubert String Quartet in G ma- jor, Opus posthumous, in two performances on 24 and 25 July.

Summer Music had its origins in a Piano Masterclass which Thomas McIntosh organized thirty two years ago. The tradition has been maintained, and every year a Masterclass is run in parallel with the Festival. There will be a public Masterclass Concert on Thursday 29 July at which members of the class perform works which they have studied during Summer Music.

We are all looking forward to a great thirty second season during which we hope to see you.
