This Year’s Supper Concerts
The series opens with The Romantic Era in Words & Music in which Judith
Buckle, mezzo-soprano, Brian Ralph, narrator, and Thomas McIntosh, piano will
guide us through the years from 1800 to 1850. This was the age when the great
Romantic poetry of Keats, Shelley & Wordsworth was matched by the music of Bellini,
Beethoven & Chopin. Love was in the air; partings & broken hearts were the
order of the day and popular songs such as Home, Sweet Home and I dreamt that I
dwelt in marble halls were first heard. Charles Dickens wrote Pickwick papers and
Oliver Twist and, of course, Jane Austen wrote Pride & Prejudice.

The Second Concert concentrates on The Victorian Age in Words & Music. Judith
& Ralph are joined by Peter Grevatt, baritone. Momentous events took place: the
Great Exhibition of 1851, the Crimean War, the American Civil War, the Indian Mutiny
and the Boer War. Mrs Gaskell wrote Cranford, Tennyson The Charge of the
Light Brigade, and the Brownings their love poetry. Lewis Carroll & Rudyard Kipling
were immensely popular. The 1860s & 1870s were the heyday of the music box,
Stephen Foster composed Beautiful Dreamer and Jeannie with the light brown hair;
and the American Civil War was the inspiration for some poignant songs on both
sides. We shall also pay homage to Gilbert & Sullivan, Rag-time and the Music
Hall.

For the third concert, we indulge in an evening of romance and glamour with The
Golden Age of British Musicals in which Judith and Peter have the floor all to
themselves. We begin with songs from Chu Chin Chow which opened in London in
August 1916 and ran for more than 5 years, and end with Salad Days and The Boyfriend
both of which opened in London in 1954. In between, Noel Coward, Ivor
Novello and Vivian Ellis dominated the music theatre scene and produced such
gems as Bittersweet, Glamorous Night, Perchance to Dream, Bless the Bride and
many more.
